Synopsis

This historic epic is based on the invasion of the great Benin Kingdom by the British in 1897, who then carted off Benin arts and artifacts which till date, still adorn museums around the world. For example the famous commemorative head and pendant of ivory mask representing Queen Idia (from court of Benin, 16th century) is at the British Museum, while the pendant is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA.

This is one of the most ambitious film in Nigeria since it’s independence as it seek to give an accurate, historical account of the event and make a statement as regards the right of the West to continue to hold on to these artifacts using the platform (or guise?) of the 1897 invasion of the Benin Kingdom. It also opens up the hidden truths behind the invasion, long painted as a ‘massacre’ by the West.
