interstellar-teaserposter

M.Y: Whats up folks and welcome to the second to the last of our Year In Review posts. Doing the honours with me today is Segun. He runs Movie Pencils which is one of the top and most reputable movie blogs in Nigeria.

Segun: Its great being here folks. Today, myself and M.Y will be reviewing our Top 10 Most Anticipated Movies of 2014.

M.Y: I hope ya’ll noted the ‘OUR’ in his sentence before some people start going “what? Why is Transformers not on the list?

Segun: That’s what the comment box is for folks. You can have your own top 10 movies written there. So, I guess that’s out of the way.

M.Y: We kick off first with movies from 2013 which haven’t been released to Nigerian theaters yet.

Segun: Top on my list is Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave featuring our home boy Chiwetel Ejiofor and John Lee Hancock ‘s Saving Mr Banks which features Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks’ second most reputable performance of the year.

M.Y: And then there is David O Russell’s American Hustle featuring Jennifer Lawrence and a host of other stars and Martin Scorsese’s Wolf Of Wall Street staring Leonardo Di Caprio and Jonah Hill.

Segun: With the 2013 movies out of the way, lets take a look at our top 10 most anticipated movies of 2013. In no particular order, the first movie is:

300: Rise of an Empire (March 2014)

The first 300 film was a runaway success. The phrase, ‘This Is Sparta!’ brings back amazing memories from 2007 and has become one of cinema’s most memorable movie quotes. Originally scheduled to be released in August 2013, the rescheduling has made this film all the more anticipated.

It is almost definite that this installment will be more successful than the initial, box office wise (unlike the first one, it now has a fan base), but will the movie be able to exceed the awesomeness of 300? March cannot come fast enough so we can find out. Watch the trailer below:

M.Y: Dazzling Mirage (Unknown 2014)

Nigerian Film making legend Tunde Kelani has his latest project being a collaboration with the high profiled award winning Ade Solanke. She scribes the screenplay based off Olayinka Abimbola Egbokhare’s novel Dazzling Mirage. Dazzling Mirage which is a story of a sickle cell sufferer’s struggle with life, love and work was opened up to the public for interested hands in different areas of film making to come in and join in on the project by Tunde Kelani. That’s was a really cool initiative which raised a platform for aspiring film makers to come learn a couple of things from the Legend himself. Watch the trailer below:

Segun: Noah (March 2014)

Following the success of the Bible series earlier in 2013, it is no surprise that Hollywood is following through with the production of Biblical adaptation of Noah. As a friend of mine once said, with the dearth in creativity in Hollywood these days, it’s no surprise that producers are turning to Biblical stories.

I cannot wait to see what Darren Aronofsky comes up with following his take on movies such as ‘The Fountain’, ‘The Wrestler’ and ‘Black Swan’. Can Noah be the Biblical story to topple Passion of the Christ as the most successful Biblical film? We shall wait and see, meanwhile, you can watch the trailer below:

M.Y: The Raid 2  (March 2014)

In 2012, while reading a review of the year’s best movies by a blogger, I stumbled across a certain movie which he called “the best action film of 2012″. The title of the movie was The Raid: Redemption. I quickly went searching and when I found it, boy-oh-boy was I amazed at what an indie director named Gareth Evans whom no one knew and gave a chance could do with such a low budget movie. So the announcement of The Raid 2 was a welcome development to me, and I believe I wasn’t alone with that thought. Then we got the trailer which was really good and probably had more action in it than many of hollywood’s full feature blockbusters. If the movie is anything like its prequel and as good as the trailer looks, then we have an amazing movie on our hands. Watch the trailer below:

Segun: Amazing Spiderman 2 (May 2014)

When ‘The Amazing Spiderman’ was released in 2011, I was thrilled. Not only were they able to reboot a story that had been told multiple times, they did it so well considering the space between it and the last series. The High Point in Amazing Spidey for me was that they finally got the character Peter Parker/Spiderman the way I remembered him from my childhood and this tells the story of Spiderman right from the very beginning.

Even though some people are not so thrilled by it all, I am eagerly awaiting the release of Amazing Spidey 2 so I can enjoy Spidey at his original best. It doesn’t harm that there will be multiple villains to test my guy J

M.Y: Interstellar (November 2014)

If you are expecting me to give reason why I have Christopher Nolan’s movie about astronauts jumping through space featuring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine on this list, then you must be joking.

If you don’t know who Christopher Nolan is and his reputation, well Google was created for a reason.

Watch the trailer below:

Segun: X-Men: Days of Future Past (May 2014)

Yes! Finally we get the X-Men back, not just Oga wolverine. To make it even better the film is a sequel to two of the best films in the X-men series so we will get to see most of our favourite characters back on the screen! It’s like going into an Ice cream store and having a mix of all your favourite flavours…. It could either be heaven or an absolute disaster! I place my money on the former.

Whatever happens, I know I will be in front of the queue when this movie gets released.

M.Y: October 1 (Unknown 2014)

Nigerian film making maven Kunle Afolayan follows up his highly successful movie Phone Swap with a historic thriller titled October 1 which is about a serial killer who is to be caught before the Nigerian flag goes up on our independence day.

October 1st is on this list for several reasons. First being the fact that it is by Kunle Afolayan and his reputation precedes the name, secondly it has a reported budget of a whooping 2 million dollars, thirdly it boasts of a cast of international artists and finally it has the backing of some of the most reputable brands in Nigeria. Even before its release, the trailer has won an award  Watch the trailer below:

Segun: The Hobbit: There and Back Again. (December 2014)

Peter Jackson’s Hobbit Trilogy comes to an end next year and while the run hasn’t been on par with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, it has managed to be awesome in its own light. I do not like watching movies more than once on any media so when I agreed to go the cinema to watch Desolation of Smaug the second time, I knew I really really liked the series.

How will Smaug get what’s coming to him?

How does Bilbo overcome the influence of the Ring?

How does Gandalf escape and how much does Sauron’s march to war progress?

All these had better be answered by December 2014.

I believe being able to sit and watch all Six films from An Unexpected Journey to Return of The King will be an added advantage come 2015!

M.Y: Lego Movie (Febuary 2014)

If we are to judge by the trailer alone, this movie is going to be a hilarious experience. But the good thing is, there is actually more to it than the lovely trailer. Lego Movie is being helmed by the duo who brought us 21 Jump street and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in persons of Chris Miller and Phil Lord. The movie looks visually attractive, it features a lot of characters we love such as Superman, wonder woman, batman, a Gandalf wanna be and includes a very talented cast in persons of Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks, Will Farrell, Liam Neeson, Jonah Hill and Chris Pratt. If my predictions are correct and the movie is as good as it is shaping out to be, this may be an Oscar contender for best animated picture come next year.
